COVID-19 in a child with down syndrome and extensive pulmonary tuberculosis: a case report

Abstract Introduction: although pediatric patients have comparatively fewer cases of COVID-19, children with Down Syndrome exhibit comorbidities such as immunodeficiency, diabetes and, in this perspective, are considered a population at risk for severe COVID-19. In addition, the literature also points to an unfavorable perspective on co-infection Mycobacterium tuberculosis, important comorbidity and predictor worse clinical outcome. Description: female child, nine years old, Syndrome, congenital heart disease prematurity, significant weight loss intermittent fever six months. A week ago, she had intensification fever, productive cough mild respiratory distress. RT-PCR SARS-CoV-2 detectable nasopharynx swab, chest X-ray diffuse alveolar infiltrate, CT consolidations, excavation, solid micronodules sprouting tree pattern mainly right upper lower lobes. Molecular rapid test tuberculosis gastric lavage. After specific treatment, patient progressed well was discharged from hospital after 72 hours without improvement her breathing pattern. Discussion: despite extensive pulmonary involvement, did not require invasive ventilatory support presented satisfactory short-term Therefore, relevance association Tuberculosis COVID-19 other age group still remains uncertain.
